HbA1c Normal Range in India: What Your Number Means

HbA1c Normal Range in India: What Your Number Means

What is HbA1c?

HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) measures your average blood sugar over the past 2-3 months. Unlike fasting blood sugar which shows one moment, HbA1c shows the big picture.

ICMR Reference Ranges for Indians

  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Pre-diabetic: 5.7% – 6.4%
  • Diabetic: 6.5% or higher

Why Indians Need Different Ranges

Indians develop diabetes at lower BMI and younger ages compared to Western populations. The ICMR 2020 guidelines account for this genetic predisposition.

Indian Diet Interventions

  1. Replace white rice with brown rice or millets (ragi, jowar, bajra)
  2. Add fiber — dal, vegetables, whole grains slow sugar absorption
  3. Control portion size — the Indian thali tends to be carb-heavy
  4. Walk after meals — even 15 minutes helps significantly
  5. Reduce sugar in chai — this alone can improve HbA1c
