Hemoglobin Kam Hai? ICMR Guide 2026 — Hindi mein

What is Hemoglobin?

Hemoglobin is a protein in your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to every part of your body. Think of hemoglobin as oxygen couriers — they pick up oxygen and deliver it everywhere.

Normal Hemoglobin Ranges (ICMR 2020)

  • Adult Men: 13.0 – 17.0 g/dL
  • Adult Women: 12.0 – 15.5 g/dL
  • Pregnant Women: 11.0 – 14.0 g/dL
  • Children (6-12 years): 11.5 – 15.5 g/dL

These are ICMR 2020 reference ranges, calibrated for Indian bodies. Western apps use CDC ranges which may not be accurate for you.

Why is Low Hemoglobin Common in India?

India has one of the highest rates of anemia in the world. Nearly 50% of Indian women are anemic. The main reasons:

  1. Iron-deficient diet — Many Indian diets are heavy on carbs and light on iron-rich foods
  2. Poor iron absorption — Tea and coffee with meals blocks iron absorption
  3. Heavy periods — Unaddressed menstrual health issues
  4. Vegetarian diet without planning — Plant-based iron is harder to absorb

Iron-Rich Indian Foods

You don't need expensive supplements. Start with these Indian kitchen staples:

  • Rajma (kidney beans) — 6.7 mg iron per cup
  • Palak (spinach) — 2.7 mg per 100g
  • Chana (chickpeas) — 4.7 mg per cup
  • Dates (khajoor) — 1 mg per 4 dates
  • Methi (fenugreek leaves) — excellent iron source
  • Jaggery (gur) — 11 mg per 100g
  • Poha (flattened rice) — iron-fortified

Pro tip: Eat vitamin C-rich foods (lemon, amla, orange) with iron-rich meals to boost absorption by up to 6x.

When to See a Doctor

See a doctor if your hemoglobin is: - Below 10.0 g/dL (moderate anemia) - Below 7.0 g/dL (severe — seek immediate care) - Dropping consistently over multiple tests
