Vitamin D Deficiency in India: Why 70% Are Affected

Vitamin D Deficiency in India: Why 70% Are Affected

The Paradox of Vitamin D in India

India is a sun-rich country, yet nearly 70-80% of Indians are Vitamin D deficient. This is one of the biggest public health paradoxes in our country.

Normal Ranges (ICMR 2020)

  • Sufficient: 30-100 ng/mL
  • Insufficient: 20-29 ng/mL
  • Deficient: Below 20 ng/mL
  • Severely Deficient: Below 10 ng/mL

Why Are Indians Deficient Despite Sunlight?

  1. Darker skin — Melanin reduces UV absorption, so Indians need more sun exposure than lighter-skinned populations
  2. Indoor lifestyles — Office jobs, work-from-home culture, air-conditioned environments
  3. Pollution — Urban air pollution blocks UV rays significantly
  4. Clothing — Cultural dress codes cover most skin surfaces
  5. Vegetarian diet — Limited natural dietary sources of Vitamin D in Indian vegetarian food

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Bone pain and muscle weakness
  • Fatigue and tiredness that doesn't improve with rest
  • Frequent infections and slow healing
  • Hair loss and mood changes
  • Joint pain, especially in knees and back

Indian Food Sources of Vitamin D

  • Fatty fish — Salmon, mackerel (bangda), sardines
  • Egg yolks — 1 egg = ~40 IU
  • Fortified milk — Amul, Mother Dairy fortified variants
  • Mushrooms — Sun-dried mushrooms are excellent
  • Fortified cereals and oils

Supplementation Guide

ICMR recommends 600 IU daily for adults. For deficient individuals, doctors typically prescribe: - 60,000 IU weekly sachets for 8-12 weeks (loading dose) - Maintenance: 60,000 IU monthly or 1,000-2,000 IU daily

Always supplement with Vitamin K2 and magnesium for better absorption. Take with a fat-containing meal.
